Note for 2027: Try not to arrange a match away at Trevose when the Royal Cornwall Show is on – there will be traffic!
On Thursday 4th June, buoyant from our away win at Newquay, Summer Scratch League team took to the road once more to face our friends there again. The 45 mph winds and heavy cloud made the 25-degree sunshine we had enjoyed in Newquay the week before feel a distant memory.
We were without a couple of our South West-Week all stars, Brandon and Louis, who were preparing for their travels to The Isle of Purbeck to represent Cornwall. Their absence provided an opportunity for ‘Captain Bradly’ to return to the action!
The order was as follows:
- Max Stockwell & Guy Norris vs Charlie Runnalls & George Tunbridge
- Graham Webb vs Lewis Bradley
- Steve Davies vs Bobby Godfrey
In keeping with the last report, events unfolded in dramatic fashion and kept everyone watching on edge.
Runnalls and Tunbridge got to the turn at 1 down, halving the 9th in birdie, Bradley was up against Graham Webb and Godfrey was having a tough match against Steve Davies.
The first result came from Godfrey, who was defeated despite a spirited performance. Trevose led 1–0.
By the 16th tee, the positions were finely balanced: Runnalls and Tunbridge were one down, while Bradley had edged one ahead!
On the par-3 16th, playing 200 yards into a fierce wind, Runnalls found trouble to the left and lost the ball, leaving the pair with an uphill task. Meanwhile, Bradley showed his composure by holing a crucial par putt to maintain his lead.
Tunbridge delivers an all time motivational speech to Runnalls, who then knocked his 9 iron to a few feet on the tricky 17th – game on! Tunbridge converts for the birdie and the pair make their way to the 18th tee. Looking behind, Bradley had hit a signature bombed drive down the middle of the fairway and pitched one on to 20 feet.
Runnalls hits a good drive up the 18th leaving about 150 yards to the pin. Tunbridge then hits a 9 iron to about 25 feet. Guy Norris hits their second to the back of the green, which was proceeded by Max Stockwell trickling one down the green to about 4 feet. Runnalls then putted one down the green, tracking, tracking, tracking, IT IS IN! A birdie, birdie finish to tie the match!
With uncertainty over how a tied match would be resolved, Captain Bradley initially pointed back towards the 1st tee. It was soon clarified that the overall result required a definitive outcome, with the foursomes point proving decisive if needed. So the Foursomes match made their way over to the 1st hole that is playing 45 mph into the wind – joy!
Looking back Captain Bradley has hit another fantastic drive and the match in front assumes he is 1 up playing the last!
Tunbridge sends a drive down the 1st, when attention turned to Bradley, whose position looked strong, only for it to emerge that he had suffered costly three-putts on the 17th and 18th, resulting in a 1-down defeat to Webb.
This left the final score at 2.5–0.5 in favour of Trevose, marking our first loss of the season. A disappointing outcome, though on another day the match could easily have gone the other way.
Well played to all involved.
Postscript: George did, in fact, sprint down the 1st to retrieve his golf ball.
