Brilliant Brandon Plays a Blinder

On Sunday 22nd, the Saunders Cup was contested at Trevose Golf Club in challenging conditions. A true test from the Championship Tees measuring just under 7000 yards and with winds gusting up to 35 mph. The 36-hole medal competition featured both a handicap event and a scratch prize, drawing some of the best amateur talent from around the region.

Brandon arrived at Trevose in fine form, fresh from a 3rd-place finish in the strokeplay section of the County Championship. He carried that momentum into the morning round, carding a composed gross 72 made up of three birdies, three bogeys, and a steady run of pars. That effort placed him 2nd in the gross competition at the halfway mark and just two shots back in the race for the Saunders Cup.

In the afternoon, Brandon stepped it up once again, posting an impressive gross 70 in tough conditions. Highlights included back-to-back birdies on 9 and 10 – incredibly, both after finding fairway bunkers from the tee – and a superb birdie at the last to close with style. His total of 142 gross and nett stood as a benchmark for the field.

Ultimately, Brandon finished just one shot behind Leigh Jones of Teignmouth Golf Club in the Saunders Cup standings. However, his birdie at the 18th proved decisive in securing the lowest gross score of the day across 36 holes – a tremendous achievement in such testing conditions.

This marks another standout performance in a superb season for Brandon, whose handicap has now moved to an impressive +2.9.
