John Ruskin once wrote "There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather". Many of the sixty-four golfers who took part today in the 2017 Tom Noggi would perhaps demur, tolerating, as they did in good humour occasional hail storms, 50 mph gusts of wind and biting cold. However noting that much of the country was blanketed in snow then perhaps Ruskin was right.
The elements not withstanding the golfers set out to do battle for either the General Manager's (Simon Greatorex) team or for the Head Pro's (Nick Williams) team. This event is one of the most popular in the Club's golfing calendar. As usual the format for the match was four ball better ball match play with added banter and sledging thrown in for good measure.
The match was tight with the General Managers team having the edge with in the opening matches, but then came somewhat of a collapse a la the England cricket team and Nick's team team ran out comfortable winners. Thus the trophy (the new trophy that is; it being alleged that the old one went into retirement with the last years winning Captain), and the corresponding bragging rights, will now spend the next year in the Pro Shop.
There was an excellent bangers and mash meal afterwards followed by a lengthy speech by Pro Nick Williams where the fines were dished out thick and fast for the most tenuous of offences ranging from failing to reach the ladies tee on the 1st to general wingeing; all in all the Captain's Charity benefited greatly. A great end to Christmas and the 2017 golfing calendar.
