On Friday, 27 May, China Fleet Seniors travelled to the links, which looked at their very best under a cooling breeze and in warm sunshine – a glorious day. Compliments were to be heard aplenty from the visitors about the course generally, but about the greens in particular, as well as with the catering. There is little higher praise than, ‘I feel privileged to be able to play here.’ So said one of the opponents, emphasizing just how blessed we are and bringing a tear to the eye of Old Hickory !
As several of the regulars were unavailable, the Old Saints were relatively happy with a 4 – 4 draw and Ken Metcalfe was especially happy to win the NTP wine, being only a matter of inches from a hole-in-one on the 15th.
At around 10.15 a.m., one former club steward, whilst sitting in the car park at China Fleet effortlessly easing his way through the DT cryptic crossword, saw that one of the answers was ‘Mastermind’. This prompted the realization that the match was not there, but at home ! Needless to say when he made it back – just in time – predictably, the wits were out in force congratulating him on the ‘longest drive !!’
