This winters CGU KO competitions began on Sunday with a Cornwall Bowl match against near neighbours St Kew at The Point at Polzeath. Considering the battering Cornwall has taken over the past 48 hours from Storm Callum the course was in excellent shape, trim and well presented. The weather too became better and better as the day went on, waterproofs off and down to polo shirts.
Grahame Green wrote a novel, eventually also a film, entitled "Went the Day Well ?" If that question had been posed to Bowl Captain Derick Rushton round about lunch time the answer would not have been too positive. The match did not start off encouragingly for St Enodoc with two losses in the first two matches both by comfortable margins. But the tail began a fightback with Matt Hamley and Ian Day inflicting a crushing 7 & 6 defeat on ther opponents. However behind them Mark Jarvis and Jeremy Knight were 4 down and things were not looking good for St Enodoc; slowly but surely Mark and Jeremy clawed their way back winning holes 15, 16, 17 & 18 to win 2 up, a very fine and fighting comeback. Match score then 2 points each. The last minute replacements, and final pair, were Malcolm Mullis and Kevin Cornford, 1 down after 15 they won 16 and had chances to close the match out on both the 17th and 18th holes but failed to take them. So down to the 1st extra hole ! Eventually it came down to the pair making the least number of mistakes and Malcolm and Kevin held their nerves to win the final point - well played !
Jack Chudleigh & Richard Palmer lost 4&3
Pete Liddicoat & Andy Burt lost 3&2
Matt Hamley & Ian Day won 7&6
Mark Jarvis & Jeremy Knight won 2 up
Malcolm Mullis & Kevin Cornford won 1st extra hole
St Enodoc 3 points St Kew 2 points
