St. Enodoc Golf Club - St Enodoc through to the Quarter-Finals of the Frank Wills Salver

St Enodoc through to the Quarter-Finals of the Frank Wills Salver

Played today, Sunday 2nd November, at bright and very breezy Newquay GC this 2nd round Frank Wills Salver brought several surprises. Whilst the match result was never ever really in any doubt two of the games ended in surprising reverses for St Enodoc.

Playing against our near neighbours located at Roserrow and re-named the “The Point at Polzeath”, this was an opportunity for their Frank Wills team to spring a surprise and even the scores after their Bowl defeat against St Enodoc on October 18th. The Point Wills team had sprung a surprise in the 1st round by beating Mullion 3.5 points to 1.5 points and now, strengthened by new recruits from Lostwithiel, will have had a high level of confidence.

As usual Captain Bob's boys were well turned out in the Club colours; and were, also as usual, well supported with the Club Captain and Vice-Captain present.

Conceding three shots to their opponents (every St Enodoc pair had to concede shots) Kevin Brenton & John Pease led off for St Enodoc. However this was not their day, form deserted them and eventually they went down 4&3. Amongst the very best of Frank Wills pairs in the County this was their first Wills defeat in two years. Paul Dingle and Mike Masters carried on their good form from the first round and were never troubled in running out 3&2 winners. Likewise John Paul and Dave Flew were too good for their opponents winning easily 4&3. Along with Brenton and Pease, Richard Hawken and Richard Lawrence have been nigh on unbeatable in this competition for several years now – their form too deserted them today and they lost 2&1 on the 17th green. Not that it mattered as by then Keith Hawke playing with Junior Captain Sam Jarvis were winning their game and the match on the 16th by 4&2. Today the team demonstrated it's strength in depth and which will no doubt be needed in the quarter-finals where they will meet the winners of the tie between China Fleet and Tehidy – current co-holders of the Salver.
