Played in near Arctic conditions at windy Newquay GC today, Sunday 24th February, St Enodoc CTC Team ground out a gritty semi-final win against Tehidy Park GC 7.5 to 4.5 points.
Newquay golf course was in excellent condition for this match - a credit to the Green Keeper and his team. This match was a repeat of last years quarter-final at the same venue and which Tehidy won and puts St Enodoc into the final for the second time in two years.
A good morning session sent our boys into lunch 2.5 to 1.5 points to the good after the foursomes and with the 9th man match, Simon Welch, also in the bag put the team in a good position for the afternoon singles. The highlight of the morning play was certainly also the come back of the day. Rob Davies and Steve Buse found themselves 4 down after 5 holes and so it remained until the 14th hole when the fight back began. The last five holes were played in two under par and with it a valuable half point.
In the afternoon it was very tight for a long time with nothing to choose between the two sides. After losing the top match on the 18th; Captain Steve Chapman, playing second, then showed the way with a typically dogged performance to close his game out 2 up. A Robbie Moore loss frayed the nerve ends a little until Mike Weaver and Rob Davies, whose dedicated practice this winter paid off, put our noses in front again. Another win by in form Kris Godfrey and halves from Mark Justice and Jack Irwin ensured a comfortable win.
Speaking after the match Steve Chapman thanked all the caddies and supporters for braving the cold and cheering on the team.
