“What a difference a day makes” goes the song lyrics and how true as Cornwall bounced back from defeat to crush Wiltshire 13-1 to keep their hopes alive of winning the Match Play Shield. The morning Singles started with Joe “Pathfinder” Cruse keeping his unbeaten record going defeating Garry Slade 2 up; the next 2 matches were both halved after which all the remaining five games went to Cornwall even though most of the individual game scores were fairly close however the best result was Ryan Curtis winning 4 & 2. So at lunch the match score was 7 -1 to Cornwall.
Joe Cruse and Matt Richards commenced the Foursomes and had a close match being All Square at the turn and still that way with 3 to play; however winning 16 and 17 saw them run out 2 & 1 winners. Ryan Curtis and Rob McGregor came back from one down at the turn to be All Square on the 16th tee and as with the first match wins on 16 and 17 saw them also home 2 & 1. The biggest win of the afternoon was recorded by Josh Greenaway, firing on all cylinders again, and Richard Jasper who after a tight start winning 3 holes on the trot got their noses well in front and they ran out 5 & 4 winners. The final game of Conor Wilson & Jared Mortimore looked nicely in their control being 2 up on the 15th tee only to lose that hole so they were now just 1 up and 3; winning 16 put them back 2 up and a half on 17 saw them win 2 &1. The 16th proved a good hole for Cornwall today!
So all is set for the final day - other than a poor looking weather forecast; if only it would hold for just one more day after such a dry warm week. Cornwall will play Dorset and we are still well in with a shout of winning the week as it will be between us and Gloucestershire who halved 7-7 today against Somerset. If we beat Dorset tomorrow Gloucestershire will have to beat Devon if they are to the overall winners so come on Cornwall and come on Devon!
