Day 3 of the South Western Counties Championships was Medal Day with at stake the individual winner and also the team winners who will go forward to the English Counties Finals representing the South West be held at Sandwell Park, not a million miles from Spagetti Junction in the West Midlands. 36 holes round St Enodoc at the best of times sorts the men out from the boys and despite the wonderful sunny conditions and immaculate state of the course was certainly the case with both winners, including the course and some serious losers!
After a leading score by 2 in the morning with a round of 66, 3 under Par, Gloucestershire's Laurie Potter, a member of Cotswold Edge Golf Club where “our own” Rob Davies is now the Head Greenkeeper he cemented victory by following it up with an almost equally impressive afternoon round of 67 to post a score of 133 for a total of 5 under Par and was the leader in the Clubhouse from early on. A storming second round by Cornwall's Rob McGregor of 64, 5 under Par which is certainly a course record off the recently extended Blue tees got him close and was the best round of the day. Following his opening round of 71 it pulled Rob up to within 2 shots of Laurie to finish a brilliant second. One of the late finishers was Harry Hall who came third overall one shot further back with very strong rounds of 69 and 67.
In the County event Cornwall dominated proceedings for with a combined score of 20 over par some 38 shots better than second place Somerset. Thanks also are due to the other four members of the nominated team of 6 who were Joe Cruse on +1, Matt Richards on +5, Josh Greenaway on +7 and Conor Wilson on +12. Mention must also be made of Chris Fleming who finished 11th in the individual on +5 who was not nominated in the 6 to score; strength in depth if I ever did see! Tomorrow it is back to match play with the same format as Days 1 and 2 playing this time against Gloucestershire.
