At 930am on Monday 22nd July Penny Cartwright and Sue Roworth teed off in the final of the Soper Rose Bowl.
Both had battled their way to the final with some superb wins and excellent golf. The morning was overcast but warm and it was Sue who made the first charge winning the 1st hole and keeping the one up lead until an unlucky bounce on a sprinkler head enabled Penny to go all square with a nice par on the 5th. The Himalayas punished Penny and the Alps punished Sue but following a 20ft putt on the 7th and a near birdie on the 8th Penny took the lead for the first time in the match. So, one up to Penny going down the 10th which was halved. Wins on the 11th and 13th put Penny 3 up. A well played 14th saw Sue winning the hole and the 15th was halved in Par (via a bunker for one of the ladies!). Digging deep saw Sue winning the 16th to go back to just one down, the 17th was halved. Standing on the 18th tee there was all to play for through the sprinkler system (thanks to Will for turning them off for the ladies to drive). The match didn’t disappoint with Sue winning the hole, squaring the match and having to go down the 19th. Both played the hole sensibly and halved it. Down the 20th they went. A long drive from Penny gave her the advantage but Sue wouldn’t give up with a great chip up onto the green. However, a good putt from Penny saw her winning on the 20th hole in what was a very exciting and quite long final. Well played ladies, a great match played in good spirits.
Congratulations to Penny.
