The fifth and final round of the Seniors’ Winter Eclectic competition on the Church course was completed in challenging conditions on Monday, 09 March. This Stableford event, only in its second year, appears to be very popular with the old boys – 38 competitors entered – and seems likely to become a regular fixture in the winter calendar.
There were no real surprises on the leader-board in the first couple of rounds, but congratulations must go to the eventual winner, Mike Kent on 50 points, who was always the man to catch. He not only shared the lead in the first round, but remained there on his own all the way to the finish, though Dr Consistency, David Elliott was always snapping at his heels.
Clearly, the money that Mike forked out for his lessons was well spent, although there is little doubt that on this form, his profitable handicap will probably suffer some serious pruning as the better weather approaches !
The big movers included Terry Johns who came up on the rails to go steadily from 11th to 2nd place; Geoff Matthews from 11th to 4th place, improving on 7 holes in one round, whilst other notable performances saw Keith Hawke improve by a remarkable 14 points in one round. Steve Smith scored 40 points in only two rounds and Derek Rushton managed 45 in three.
