Our home fixture against Launceston looked quite doubtful as we met at the Club on the appointed day, Monday 21st March, with heavy rain falling and a cold wind blowing. The Captain of the day even had a phone call from the opposing team who doubted our commitment. A quick review of the weather radar gave us the confidence to start, and we were well rewarded with excellent weather after the first few holes.
Sadly, the Captain, with partner Nigel Thomas, just failed to secure a point, although Nigel had a five-foot putt on 18 to win the hole and gain a half! Regrettably it shaved the hole and Launceston were leaders in the Club House. However, the Captain’s clever team selection came in to play with the home team losing only ½ a point during the rest of the afternoon. Most notable amongst the games was an 8 and 6 win for Mike Maberley and Tony Mindel.
This is one of our favourite matches. It is always played in a friendly and sporting spirit. The team are looking forward to the away fixture in August when we hope to retain the Trophy which, thanks to Launceston, now sports a second layer of shields and is ready to record a good few years of excellent competition ahead.
