Seniors versus Launceston
Monday 18th March
This was the third match in the current season. The weather was not encouraging with a persistent mist swirling about the course. Stepper Point appeared and then disappeared through an opalescent light. However, there was evidence of the fairways recovering from the difficulties of the past year. The greens were in good condition and received favourable comments from the visitors.
There was a strange mood amongst the team as it assembled in the clubhouse. It was probably owing to the rugby results over the weekend. The Welsh contingent were remarkably restrained and resisted any hint of triumphalism, just exchanging the occasional smile as they prepared for the match. There was one element who explained the result by blaming the Australian referee, who should be immediately sacked from the RFU.
The Launceston Captain explained that he had not played St Enodoc before and described it like anticipating playing at Augusta. It was good to see recent recruits included in the team: David Mitchell, Geoff Jones, Nigel Ashcroft, John Arnold, and John Robinson. The match concluded with a win for St Enodoc 6 to 2. Nearest the pin on the 11th hole was Richard Palmer.
Geoff Mathews and David Mitchell won 2 and 1
Keith Willmott and Mike Lovett won 2 and 1
Geoff Jones and Colin Earle won 4 and 2
Nigel Ashcroft and John Arnold lost 4 and 3
Kevin Birkett and John Robinson won 1 up
Paul Godfrey and Kevin Burton won 7 and 6
Richard Palmer and David Ramsbottom lost 4 and 3
Phil Higgs and Nigel Thomas won 3 and 2
