With such a journey for golfers of a certain age there is an inevitable determination and resolve that is a prerequisite for the Senior section of Saunton Golf Club. Yet we know that the fixture against St Enodoc is so popular that their members must sign up weeks in advance, prove themselves to be in top form, and it is even rumoured that brown envelopes must be slipped surreptitiously into the Captain’s pockets to facilitate team selection. So, it is a strong team which journeys across the Cornish border every year to engage with the Old Saints.
Nevertheless, having drawn 4 each in the away match, St Enodoc was anticipating a good chance of securing a victory, and so it proved to be the case with a 6 to 2 win.
However, "Niblick” needs to report on the two defeats! Thomas and Wilmott went one down on the 16th hole and despite securing pars on Holes 17 and 18 lost 1 down. The match that gained most attention in the club house was that of Lovett and Olesen who went down 7 & 6, there was much muttering of outrageous putts and ridiculous chipping in the hole. But hey that’s golf.
With Wimbledon in mind -
“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Golfer, my son!”
Well done to the rest of the team.
