The Seniors’ match fixture season opened with the long run to North Devon on Friday 7th March. The drive to Saunton was in gloomy conditions and gloomier demeanour as thick mist reduced both speed and enthusiasm, whilst the prospect of a fruitless, 120 mile round trip appeared likely. However, the Lord shines on His virtuous Saints (!) and on arrival, the mist cleared, the skies turned blue and the sun shone. Challenging and unfamiliar conditions indeed !
History will show that this fixture is a demanding one and that few visitors, including our Seniors, leave victorious. On this occasion though, the old boys made the return journey light of heart and with a song in the air having breached ‘Fortress Saunton’ with a victory by 4½ - 3½.
Memorable moments ? Saunton’s Mike Shapland achieved his first hole-in-one on the par 3, 4th hole, which cost him a bob or two. But this was low-key stuff compared with the undiluted surprise and joy when Keith Hawke realised his nearest-the-pin had won him a bottle of wine, which cost him nothing !
