In the return match against visitors St Mellion on Monday 27 April, the Seniors managed to draw 4 – 4 which went a little way to redressing the balance after their heavy defeat in the first fixture.
After a light shower or two, the celebrated links soon basked in the gathering strength of the sun, which shone from a sky of pure sapphire, gilding the course and turning the estuary into sheet of azure blue. However, though these magical delights of nature were clearly appreciated by the opposition, they were insufficient to distract them from the task in hand. Even COD Mike Maberly’s tactic of pointing out the acrobatic antics of a low-flying buzzard on heat failed adequately to dent the concentration of his opponents, though it did manage to distract his partner at the top of his backswing !
As if encapsulating the spirit of Seniors’ golf, the day then concluded with an intimate and touching little moment when each Captain presented the other with a bottle of wine each having won their nearest the pin competition - brings a tear to the eye !
