In a repeat of the 2016 final Kevin Birkett and Nigel Thomas were the last survivors of this year’s Match play competition. After the fine weather of recent weeks there was an uncertainty about the conditions on the 8th August with a stiff breeze blowing about the links course. Dark clouds even threatened rain. As it was the rain kept away and the day settled to good golfing conditions.
Mr Thomas began well establishing an early lead, but Mr Birkett pulled this back and at one point was three up. The strength of the wind was increasing. By the 14th the game was evenly balanced and both players managed to par this hole, even though it was directly into the wind. Mr Birkett chipped from below the wall to halve the hole. Again, the match went one way then the other. They arrived at the 18th hole all square, but Mr Birkett held his nerve to come out the winner. The match was played in the usual sporting spirit and Mr Birkett was a deserving winner of the 2018 Match play competition.
