Optimism was high for the Seniors’ match at Lanhydrock on Monday, 04 August. The weather forecasts all predicted a day of clear skies and unbroken sunshine, so initial preoccupations were with sunhats, sun creams and plenty of water, whilst waterproofs remained in the car. And there was plenty of water, for the forecast proved dramatically wrong as the rain fell steadily for much of the day.
Perhaps the Old Saints were thus unsettled because they lost 4 – 3 in a close match reduced to 7 pairs because of local restrictions. Whilst Captain of the Day, Derek Rushton was unmoved by further comments about his golf dress sense, he did deliver a lively after-dinner offering in which he paid tribute to the Lanhydrock course and hospitality – sentiments shared by his team.
