In a season when victories seem to be at a premium, a win is a win and if it should be a narrow one squeezed out against RND at home on 02 September, it is still very welcome. Our Saints won by 4½ - 3½ and at one stage, appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory, but later wobbles changed things. Remarkably perhaps, the wine for nearest-the-pin for the home team remained unclaimed as not one of the 16 in the home team managed to stop the ball on the 5th green ! RND is another club against whom we compete annually for a trophy awarded for the best aggregate score over two matches. In this case, the trophy is the ‘Johnny Fallon Driver,’ given a few years ago by David Balmford. Not only was Fallon the pro who taught the young David (rather successfully history would suggest – high honours in the amateur game) but the driver was the one he used when he was victorious in the 1955 Ryder Cup. Fallon was also the non-playing captain of the 1963 GB Ryder Cup team. Let’s hope that this connection spurs the old boys to victory in the return match next Friday !
Keith Willmott & Ron Irons won 2 up
John Bower & David Balmford won 4 & 3

Keith Godfrey & Pete Smith lost 4 & 3
