The daffodils are in full bloom; the days are beginning to lengthen; and a sprightliness is noticeable in the Seniors as they emerge from their Winter hibernation. The portents were not encouraging as our Senior team made the lengthy journey to Saunton for the first match in the 2016 calendar. The North coast was concealed beneath a mass of slate grey clouds which deposited rain and sleet through an icy gale. However on arriving at the course the sun appeared and the wind reduced to a challenging freshness.
There are some traditions well established in the Seniors that will remain a constant. So it was no surprise that one of the newer members cursed his misfortune as the car sped past Bude that he had left his shoes in the garage. A quick visit to the Saunton Pro shop and a desperate scramble to uncover a pair of size elevens corrected the oversight. ( Niblick has promised not let Mrs Knight know about this extra expense?)
New shoes - new Malcolm. After 15 holes he had scored 45 points and the match was won. He finished with 51 points after 18 holes. His playing opponents were not amused but the grin on Malcolm's face could not be erased. I suspect that his travelling companions on the return journey had earplugs. Perhaps they had Van Morrison on the CD player. "My momma told me there'd be days like these."
"When it's not always raining there'll be days like this
When there's no one complaining there'll be days like this
When everything falls into place like the flick of a switch
Well my mama told me there'll be days like this."
"When you don't need an answer there'll be days like this
When you don't meet a chancer there'll be days like this
When all the parts of the puzzle start to look like they fit
Then I must remember there'll be days like this."
His card has been signed and is in the safe hands of John Radford. There is no truth in the suggestion that the Seniors will buy him new shoes for every match.
The match was lost 5 and half to 2 and a half but it was played in the usual friendly spirit; and it is an encouraging basis for the return match in July and the recovery of the bugle.
