After a comfortable win at home a couple of weeks ago, the Seniors were hoping to complete the double at Lanhydrock on Monday, 14 October. However, it was not to be, as this time, it was the turn of the hosts to impose a comfortable win by 6½ matches to 1½. Perhaps it was the rain or playing on manicured, lush, grassy fairways that presented a bit of challenge. However, captain of the day, Nigel Thomas, easily won the prize for the most unusual, informative captain’s speech of the season. In his inimitable and relaxed style he (‘wistfully’) took his audience through some of the history of Bodmin via such notable figures as John Betjeman, Thomas Hardy and D H Lawrence and finished with a recitation of a Hardy poem to loud applause ! Whilst the old boys may have left the club somewhat disappointed, they were certainly more enlightened and moist eyed !
