Sam Jarvis who has been both a product of the St Enodoc Academy and a valued member of our Green keeping staff has now completed the first 3 months of an 18 month internship in the United States. This all came about through discussion with Karl Morgan, who for a while last year was based as a Pro at St Enodoc and having previously worked extensively in the United States he suggested that Sam applied for it. One of the reasons he was selected as playing off a handicap of 7 he fitted the profile perfectly. His time will be spent attached to 3 clubs each for 6 months and he will also be studying turf management further at Ohio State University.
For his first 6 months Sam has been working at Scioto Country Club in Columbus Ohio which is one of the best established and well known clubs in America and was designed by Scottish architect Donald Ross in 1916. This year whilst celebrating its centenary it will be hosting the U.S. Seniors Open. Just recently Sam was co-opted to the staff at the Jack Nicklaus designed and owned Muirfield Village course for the prestigious Memorial Tournament. Sam saw what it was like when a big Tour event rolls into town and was doing a 17 hour day which certainly kept him out of trouble!
The whole experience has been a terrific opportunity for Sam so far but as yet he does not know where his second and third bases will be but he is hoping that it may be California. He certainly seems to be making the most of his time which he is never likely to forget. We will hopefully keep you posted as to his lifetime experience.
