St Enodoc Seniors versus Tehidy Tpegs
Friday 5th April 2019
The Cornish Festival had just concluded so the course was resplendent in its finest trim for the benefit of the PGA’s Western Region golfers. The Senior’s would like to pass on its congratulations to Joe Cruse who finished in the top 20 and was in the prize money. It was no surprise that St Enodoc was where some of the players came unstuck. There were fewer pars and more bogeys than the other courses. The PGA noted, “As usual St Enodoc provided the stiffest challenge with a demanding par of 69 and fast-running fairways, slick greens and danger at almost every hole.” So, the Tehidy Seniors knew that the day ahead was not going to “a walk in the park” but it was certainly not helped by the threat of rain, which inexorably arrived with persistent and penetrating vigour.
Captain of the Day Steve Smith thanked those Seniors who had stepped in at the last moment. John Robinson volunteered within the last couple of days, but Richard Norsworthy had responded to a phone call at 5pm the night before. However, he was rewarded with a bottle of wine for being closest to the pin on the 8th hole.
The early matches proved to be comfortable victories for the home side. The visitors struggled with the pace of the greens and being confused by the lack of trees. The one defeat can be explained by the 23-handicapper going off to Turkey for five days of warm weather training and intensive golf practice!
