The Seniors at Royal North Devon fielded a strong team to welcome the Old Saints to Westward Ho on Friday, 05 September. It was a wise decision, as in glorious conditions, they won comfortably by 5½ - 2½ which left them winners overall this season by 10 matches to 6. In doing so, they retained the coveted trophy, the Johnny Fallon driver for another year.
In his after-dinner speech and to loud agreement from his team, Captain of the Day, Keith Willmott, questioned his leadership qualities ! This, combined with losing his own match and his ability to muster several faux-pas at the same time without realizing it, led to a suggestion that there should be a whip-round to buy him a good book on man-management as well. This was heavily rejected on the grounds that the old boys had much better things to do with their pensions ! Despite all this and losing too, he continued to smile happily, as did his team, having enjoyed a wonderful match together with generous hospitality, warm fellowship and plenty of affectionate abuse !
