Wednesday 23rd May was the qualifying day for the Cornwall Amateur Championship and saw 69 hopefuls trying to get into the top 32 who then progress forward to the match play play-offs. In near perfect conditions the early pace was set by Chris Fleming of Perranporth whose morning 66 (3 under par) was the lowest score of the day however his 77 in the afternoon saw him slip down the leaderboard to make the cut in 9th place. Our own Joe Cruse led the qualifiers with 2 terrific and very consistent rounds of 67 to give a total of 4 under par some 6 shots clear of second place Carl Burley from Merlin. In 3rd spot is St Enodoc's Antony Nash also on +2. The only other St Enodoc qualifier was Rob Davies in a very creditable 19thspot.
The cut line of 32nd position saw 2 of Cornwall's most experienced players Ian Veale of Tehidy and St Enodoc's Steve Chapman vying for the last spot in the play-off. Sadly for Steve, who had a dreadful first round, he missed the cut by 1 shot and Ian squeezed in by the skin of his teeth. Another surprise to miss the cut was Trevose stalwart Richard Ackland who had an uncharacteristic nightmare second round.
Tomorrow (Thursday) sees the top 32 play in the morning and the winners play again in the afternoon. Friday will see the quarter finals and semi-finals - all building up to the final on Saturday morning.
