St. Enodoc Golf Club - Pandora's Box

Pandora's Box

The pre-Christmas festivities at St Enodoc continued with the Men's Pandora's box on Saturday 14th December. The day was warm for the time of year with threatening rain which never really materialised but with very strong winds which averaged 25 mph with gusts of up to 46 mph. Pandora's is a made up cross country course in teams of 4 playing a Texas Scramble format and as usual the course designer, this year Mike Buse, sets the pins in quite impossible positions, right on the edges of greens and almost always on dire slopes. Add in the high wind this made putting on several of the holes almost impossible and it was only by sinking long putts that prevented the ball ending further from the hole than where the putt was played from. The 9th (played from the lower Ladies' 10th tee) , and the 14th (played from the Blue 5th) were the most wind affected and difficult greens. Other memorable holes were over the reservoir to the blind 2nd green and 3rd tee to 6th green.

The 17 hole course kept 68 Members fully occupied for the afternoon clambering up hill and down dale and the scores under the circumstances were really very good and those in the prizes who thoroughly deserved their bottles were:-

1st Andy Beare, John Westlake, Dennis Lemarchand, & Simon Trevan 59.2 Net
2nd Rob Cook, Mike Buse, Tristan Lang & Danny Hoare 60.4
3rd Kevin Francis, Mark Knight, Pete Liddicoat & Rich Helleur 61.0

After the golf the players enjoyed pasties and wedges prior to being joined by the Lady Members who had been playing the Chicken Chase on the Holywell and they all enjoyed the carols led manfully by the Captain and Terry Johns with the St Minver Silver Band providing the music. A great day - roll on Christmas!
