The Muir Bowl was played on Saturday 9th April, with just 51 members competing to ‘Rule the World’ and hold the trophy for 2016. The weather may have put some off, there were ‘Many Clouds’ with heavy showers in the morning and even some hail. The ‘Morning Assembly’ of Early Birds had to fight the elements as if they were ‘The Last Samuri’ to get ‘Just a Par’ – maybe they should have played the ‘Holywell’!
With a sweep stake running for the Masters and for the Grand National, there was much at stake in the Clubhouse as well as on the course this Saturday. Last year’s Muir bowl winner was Mark Stevenson, but like Jorden Spieth and Many Cloud he was unable to hold on to his title.
Our winner and Muir Bowl holder 2016 is Pete Chapman. He won on countback with a nett 71. Just like Danny Willet, Pete had a great back 9. Playing off an 18 handicap, Pete had 4 gross pars on the back nine. Pete wins a £31,000,000 Voucher, oh sorry too many 0’s! A £31 Voucher.
Julian Darnell took 2nd place with nett 71 having shot 5 gross pars, he was ahead of Nigel Buse on countback who took 3rd place. Nigel had 6 gross pars and was able to stay ahead of Joe Cruse on countback.
Joe Cruse had the lowest Gross score of the day shooting 69 to finish with a nett 71. Joe had 7 pars and 2 birdies on the front 9, but having made a few bogies on the way in, he lost his advantage. Joe’s handicap has been cut and he’s back to +3.
Paul Honey came 5th with 72 followed by Rob Cook, Dave Pooley, Ken Perring and Richard Parsons all with 74.
