St. Enodoc Golf Club - Mixed fortunes at Open Regional Qualifying

All three St Enodoc hopefuls played their Open Regional Qualifying round at Remedy Oak North of Bournemouth. The 9 year John Jacob's design is set in an ancient woodland and has a very intersting selection of holes many of which are risk and reward so giving great scope for shot making. First out was Josh Walsh whose 1 under Par saw him qualify easily and he finished  in a tie for 3rd place and was the leading amateur. Antony Nash had on his own admission a poor day and finished on 8 over.

The third player Mark Justice carded an excellent level par round with 3 Birdies and 3 Bogeys and having played early in the day was very much on the bubble and even with just 6 of the 125 strong field still out on the course was set to make the top 12 to advance to Final Qualifying as he was in a 5 way tie for 8th place (and second amateur) which would have seen him through. The one problem was that there was one other player in the second last group, James Ablett from Lee on Solent, in possible contention and he also final ended on Level Par.

After a wait of over 4 hours Mark was faced with a sudden death play off to eliminate just one of the 6. Sadly he hit a poor 3 wood tee shot which left him well back and in quite heavy first cut of rough from which a 5 wood was required in a do or die attempt at the green. His ball landed to the right of the green in heavy rough and from which an up and down was really required to stay in the game. It would have been a miracle shot and it was not to be.  A sad end to an otherwise brilliant day.
