Yesterday (31st January 2016) St Enodoc's Mail on Sunday team played a team from Bowood golf club in the first round of this years competition. St Enodoc were drawn at home for this match which was played in extremely windy conditions making play for both sides difficult.
First out for the home side was Sam Jarvis taking on Rob Cook (a St Enodoc Member too), Sam received four shots from Rob in this encounter and ran out a worthy winner winning 3 & 2. Second out was the Order of Merit winner for last year John Paul taking on N Connolly; the Bowood player played really well and managed to get dormy 4 up on John Paul after 14 holes but never one to give in John fought back and won the last 4 holes for an amazing half in his match.
Third out for the home team was Andy Bunt playing county under 18 player John Rowe , Andy played steady throughout the round and ended up winning the match on the 14th 5 & 4, the home team were now two and a half points to half up and only needed another half point to win the match. Richard Blake was next playing Barry Parker, a very close match throughout Richard eventually lost on the last green 1 down, now the score was two and a half to one and a half. Last out for St Enodoc was Mike Masters playing Simon Hobbs, both off 5 handicap, some great golf ensued in this match but in the end Simon managed to get the win on the 17th green two up, match score two and a half each which meant these last two players had to go back down the 1st again. Both players hit good drives but not so good second shots, however Simon was able to reach the green with his third while Mike had to chip out sideways and on the green for four, Mike putting first from the right ran his ball 6 feet past the hole followed by Simon from the left who ran his 3 feet past , Mike then sank an excellent putt for a 6 only for Simon to follow it in with his putt and win the match three and a half to two and a half.
