The Longest Day arrived and the intrepid four ball of David Elliott, Annie Hawkey, Keith Thompson and Matthew Westlake arrived at the clubhouse at 6am to see the car park half full. Could there be others playing even earlier, no, it was the aftermath of the night before and the Cornwall sides celebrations and sensibly leaving their cars overnight.
The weather was perfect as they made their way to the first tee, not too hot, cool breeze and dry. The format was a fourball stableford, two scores to count and a generous full handicap allowance but 4 rounds to be completed in the day. Keith set the tone for the day with a birdie at the first and the team scored 7 points! Would it all go downhill and when would tiredness set in? To the surprise of all four the whole day was great fun, played at a fast pace, the opening two rounds completed in less than 5 hours, a break for lunch and two more rounds finishing by 5.30pm. But what about the scores, they were embarrassingly good. Good fun, good banter, good golf.
Round One- 88 points
Round Two- 94 points
Round Three- 92 points
Round Four- 100 points
Our thanks to caddies and supporters on the day but most of all to the very generous donations by members. Much as the golf scores were good, the total raised was even better, so far it is about £3,800 and when gift aid is added Macmillan Cancer Support Cove project will receive over £4,500 from the club!
