On Saturday October 1st we are really privileged to have the opportunity to hear from St Enodoc Member Lord Butler. He is giving a talk entitled "Life with five Prime Ministers". Robin was Private Secretary to Prime Ministers Edward Heath (1972–74) and Harold Wilson(1974–75), and Principal Private Secretary to Margaret Thatcher (1982–85). He was also Cabinet Secretary during the premierships of Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair. Robin has been a Member of the Club since 1991.
The evening will start with drinks and canapés at 5.30 followed by the talk at 6pm. Tickets (£7.50) will be available in advance over the bar, this will be a very popular event and whilst members may be able to bring guests, in the first instance Members will be given priority. Numbers will be limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. The drinks and canapes are being generously sponsored by two of our Members and this money will go towards the Captains' Charities; additionally there will be a retiring collection on behalf of the Club Captain’s charity, The Macmillan Cove Project, and that of the Lady Captain, Memory Matters South West.
Robin Butler had a high-profile career in the civil service from 1961 to 1998, serving as Private Secretary to five Prime Ministers. He was Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Home Civil Service from 1988 to 1998.
