St Enodoc juniors travelled to Carlyon Bay to compete in the Kernow Cup on Wednesday evening.
The team consisted of Elyssa Carter, Teo DeBoer and Thomas Richards. The fixture was a matchplay format, however, only one of our team had any experience of playing matchplay and that was a once a few years ago.
Unfortunately, one of the Carlyon Bay team has had to isolate and so they were a player down from the start. When our team were informed of this, Teo graciously stepped aside to let Elyssa and Thomas play. Teo was still able to play alongside one of the groups.
Elyssa was up first against Ella-Grace, a very consistent 20 handicapper. On the first tee with everyone watching, she boomed it 200yds straight down the middle of the fairway to set the team on their way.
Having lost the first 2 holes, Elyssa won the next two. However, Ella-Grace’s consistent striking of the ball eventually took its toll and despite a mini fightback from Elyssa, she was beaten 5&3.
Thomas took on the big hitting Kian and despite winning the first hole, he found himself 4 down after 7 holes. Determined not to let his head drop, he fought back to all square standing on the 15th tee. It went all the way to the 18th where a halved hole was enough for Kian and Carlyon Bay to take the victory 1 up.
The team conducted themselves brilliantly and were very gracious in defeat. The standard of play from St Enodoc was very strong but the home advantage was enough to see Carlyon Bay through. We look forward to the return fixture at St Enodoc in the near future.
