On Saturday 19th June our Academy juniors played their first competitive match of the season in the Tamar Cup. This competition involves golf clubs from Cornwall playing Devon (Thurlestone) clubs in a knockout format at a neutral venue (Carlyon Bay) consisting of two singles and a foursomes match.
Here are their personal reviews of their matches:
The match started with an early lead for me when Toby unfortunately lost his ball off the first tee. From there on it was a close encounter, with it being either all square or Toby being no more that 2up at any point. Both Toby and I played some great golf, with me holing a few long putts and Toby’s excellent short game making birdies on a number of holes. Overall it was a close game and very enjoyable, but unfortunately I lost 3&1 on the 17th green.
The match began with a slow start from me going 2 down, then I brought it back to 1 down. The next 4 holes were halved, and I won the 8th with some fine putting. The challenging 9th was halved also. The back 9, wasn’t so good and Vinnie made some great shots and won a number of holes closing the match out on the 15th - 5&3.
Daisy and Dante (playing foursomes):
The game started well with Dante’s superb tee shot, straight down the middle of the fairway. Sadly, his second shot didn’t go so well when he topped it, but luckily, we still halved the hole. From then on, Dante and I played well as a team and we enjoyed the opportunity to play at Carlyon Bay. Despite our best efforts, we were beaten 5&3 on the da
Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable match, which was played in great spirit enjoyed by both teams.
Special mention must go to Dante, for playing so well in his first ever competitive match.
The team are now looking forward to their George Bolitho league matches over the coming weeks.
Well done to you all and special thanks to Lee Bateman who arranged the match and took them all to Carlyon Bay.
