The 2012 John Cory Cup series ended on Saturday 24thMarch with the playing of the ninth and final round of the series. As usual with the men’s series competitions the top performers in the series were paired together in the final round. This format always provides us with a certain amount of excitement and this year was no exception. Some 78 men entered the series, making this year’s Cory Cup a real item of interest.
It was generally agreed that Andy Bunt’s position at the top was somewhat unassailable but Richard Hawken had different ideas. A win in the last round would have toppled Bunty but nothing less would do the trick. His final round 36 points was very respectable indeed and for a while looked as though it might have done the business.
The man who turned the whole scenario on its head was Rob Davies, who fired a brilliant round, including a hole-in-one at the 5th and 39 points playing off 3 (now 2!).
So, Andy Bunt cruised safely home to win the John Cory Cup, consolidating a brilliant winter season of golf. Richard Hawken was second by only two points in the series. Rob Davies vaulted into third with his last round performance. Other notables in the cup series included Nigel Buse, the only double winner during the winter.
