The final round of the John Cory Cup Series was played in glorious sunshine this weekend. There was a little wind from the East but altogether it was a glorious Spring day. 88 members took advantage of the weather and scores were good. Those in the Series were making their last bids to advance up the table. Did Andy Bunt do enough to hold on to the top spot?
Matt Robins won the days competition with 36 points, he played a steady round and was 3 points clear of the rest of the field. Matt is not in the series though so it was 2nd placed Guy Hovil who took the maximum series points. Guy scored 33 points to claim his 3nd place with Colin Reynolds in 3rd heading up a bunch of players with 32 points. On countback they finished in the following order; Bob Cruse 4th, Julian Darnell 5th and Lewis Bradley 6th. Also in the prizes, Shaun Beare had 31 points ahead of Mike Buse on countback and Norman Evans, Rod Frost, John Paul and Russell Combellack all had 30 points.
Andy Bunt was leading the series after last week. This week Andy scored 28 points getting him just 15 series points, not enough to improve his series score so it depended on how those behind him played. Guy Hovil took the 20 series points and Lewis Bradley 19…….
Andy Bunt held on to the top spot to be crowned Cory Cup Series Winner 2017. His 71 points were challenged by Lewis Bradley who finished on the same points but Andy’s next best score kept him at the top. Lewis was 2nd placed on the table after improving his score by 9. Guy Hovil was 3rd ahead of Andy Griffiths in 4th place both with 70 series points. Andy finished 9th last year. Norman Evans strikes again in 5th place on the table with 69 points. John Arnold, Paul Clemens, Rod Frost and Steve Chapman didn’t improve their scores quite enough to challenge for the top spots but are still in the prizes with Jack Irwin, John Rowe and Rob Cook behind them.
