A cold and windy start to the day this Saturday did not put our members off entering the 5th Round of the John Cory Cup. 90 men entered the stableford competition with scores ranging from excellent to not so good at all!
Leading the field Philip Hoare returned 39 points. After hitting a 7 on the first, Philips round improved as it went along and on the back nine he hit 6 pars off his 17 handicap (which has been cut as a result). In second place Richard Hambly also scored well on the back nine. He birdied 7 and 14 and returned to the club house with 38 points, beating Russell Combellack on countback and receiving a handicap reduction. In third, Russell Combellack also scored 38 points. On the first he holed a 25ft putt for 4 and on the 5th narrowly missed a hole in one. Russell’s handicap is now cut to 6, not great timing, just ahead of the Frank Wills Semi-Finals!
Ryan Perring came in 4th with 36 points, and Paul Warren also on 36 points was 5th. In 6th place Steve Buse scored 34 points, beating on countback, Richard Lawrence and Gavin Jarvis in 7th and 8th. Kevin Richards scored 33 to claim 9th on countback, ahead of Ian McKelvey with 33 points in 10th place. 11th place, Greg Mather scored 32 and in 12th Geoff Jones took the final prize also with 32 points.
The series is now 5 rounds complete, with best scores coming in to play. At the top of the table after this week’s strong round is Russell Combellack with 69 points. He is clear of second place, Richard Hawken, by 3 points – with 4 rounds to go there could be some beer bets in place! Philip Hoare’s excellent round this week also puts him up at the top of the table in third position on 58 points.
