Winter must be here with The John Cory Cup Series getting underway this weekend. The series of 9 rounds is played throughout the winter, finishing at the end of March next year.
90 members played in round 1 this Saturday, with 68 members entering the series. The weather certainly favoured those who played early, the wind became stronger and stronger throughout the day (the General Manager claims he had to play in hurricane conditions!) This was reflected in the scores with the best cards returned mainly from the Early Bird players.
Norman Evans stole the day with 35 points to take 1st place and to start the series at the top of the table. He was followed by David Barber, whose excellent front nine saw him into 2nd place with 34 points. Malcolm Knight, also with a strong front nine took 3rd place on countback with 33 points. Derek Rushton was just pushed into 4th on 33 points and Terry Johns topped the 32 pointers to take 5th place. Paul Warren was 6th, Mike Buse 7th, Stuart Morley 8th and Matthew Warr 9th all on 32 points. With 31 points, Ripker De Boer came 10th and Russell Combellack came 11th.
Mike Buse and Russell Combellack were the only people in the prizes to tee off after 11.30 – when the hurricane was reported to have hit the Church Course!
