Few would question that the old master, Jack Nicklaus is perhaps the world’s greatest golfer and the Old Saints would probably argue that he is also one of the finest of course designers. There is every chance that even now, he would cruise his way around his St Mellion course with far less difficulty than the Seniors did on Monday, 13 April in their recent match there.
Perhaps the concentration of the old boys was so distracted by the surrounding topographical and rural attractions that the subtle and not-so-subtle tricks and traps of Jack’s design constituted a course too far. Just who did he have in mind when constructing St Mellion – probably the Speiths, Roses or McIlroys et al ? ‘Twas clearly not our worthy Seniors, they would say, as they went down heavily, 6½ - 1½ to their hosts. A bad day at the office !
