Niblick was witness today to a quite remarkable hole in one by eleven handicapper Dennis Brown playing in the Colonels & Metropole Cups stableford competition.
Dennis normally plays early on a Saturday morning and then plays cricket for St Minver in the afternoon; this morning his cricket was called off and he decided to play with the Balls Up group (aka Waifs & Strays). On the first tee against a very strong breeze, actually a 25mph wind, Dennis managed to land his tee shot on the 18th green and from where it ended only a short distance down the fairway. Despite this inauspicious start he still managed a six for two points on the hole setting the tone for the round. Come the 5th hole the strong wind was right to left and the tee shot less than easy. Dennis took a six iron for the 160 yard shot, it landed about a foot from the hole turned 90 degrees left and straight into the hole. Dennis has been playing for thirty-eight years and this was his first hole in one. The drama continued however as John Carhart, playing in the same group, also with a six iron managed to land close to the hole and hit the pin ! He only made a birdie though and lost the hole. Dennis played really well and ended up with an excellent score of thirty-three points and which, come the end of a tough scoring day, may well be in the money.
Well played Dennis !
