Whilst it not clear exactly when a St Enodoc pair last won the Perranporth Winter Foursomes it is very clear that it has not been for a good while and so by winning today Kevin Brenton and John Pease have made some history by being the first winners in the 21st Century.
In this 36 hole final on a very windy day, with the wind regularly gusting at 50 mph, Kevin and John were up against the current hoders of the title; the Father and Son pair of Alistair and Sam Chivers both of the host club and thus with home advantage. Good golf such a day was never going to be easy and putting in particular was very difficult.
After the morning round Kevin and John were 1 up. Refreshed by lunch they took early advantage in the afternoon and by the 10th hole were 3 up. On the long par 5 11th a fine 15 foot putt by John put our pair 4 up. They were pegged back again straight away losing the 12th. The Chivers then 3 putted the 13th to restore the lead back to 4 up. John and Kevin then lost two holes on the bounce and the nerves were no doubt jangling with their lead pegged back to 2 up standing on the par 3 - 16th tee. Sam Chivers hit a fine tee shot to 20 feet; Kevin was through the green and John chipped on to 10 feet. Alistair\'s putt down and across the slope was 4 feet short. Kevin made no mistake with another very fine putt and Sam Chivers was left to make his putt to halve the hole and stay in the match. The putt was missed and Kevin and John with a 3 & 2 win became the Perranporth Winter Fousomes Champions 2014 - well done !
