Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina has hosted the US Open on a number of occasions and will next do so in 2014. A number of St Enodoc Members have played there and thus there is a link, albeit tenous, between the two clubs. This link was strengthened somewhat yesterday on the occasion of the very first match between the two clubs. The brainchild of Management Committee Member Simon Pain the match has been eighteen months in gestation and has required some considerable effort on Simon\'s part to bring about.
Despite predictions of rain the weather held dry, warm, overcast and breezy. Playing 4 ball better ball format match play St Enodoc looked as if they were cruising in the first 2 matches only to see tremendous finishing bursts over the last 4 holes by the highest US handicapper Sherry Price who was dormie 3 down on the 16th tee and came back to halve the match. Dave Thorpe for Pinehurst played tremedous golf on the last four holes to halve the second match. St Enodoc had comfortable wins in the next two matches
The final match which included two Pros playing against each other, saw a complete demolition of the St Enodoc pair as a result of some absolutely stunning play by Pinehurst Head Pro Rob Pilewski and 8 handicaper Murray Stern, who had only dropped 1 shot to Par on the front 9, Rob then had a large number of Birdies to complete the rout. The final match result was St Enodoc 3.5 Pinehurst 1.5
Speaking at the after match dinner Rob Pilewski said \"St Enodoc was the best course we played, gracious hospitality and wonderful food. Your planning was outstanding as our day at St Enodoc will be a lasting memory for everyone who participated and I can not thank you enough!\"
