St Enodoc travelled to Newquay on Sunday 1st June to play against Falmouth in the second round of the Gammon Competition. Captain Sue Ofield was forced to make last minute changes to the team due to injury, resulting in Kath Biddle being promoted to number one and Trudie Tensjo being drafted into the mix at a moment’s notice.
In the first match, Kath Biddle played against Liz Bird who was a member of Newquay Golf Club for many years and used her course knowledge to good effect. Liz had a fantastic eagle on the sixth hole to go 2 up and although Kath competed well and was pleased with her level of performance, Liz always had the upper hand and won the match on the sixteenth green.
Team Captain, Sue Ofield was drawn against Kath Wells who proved to be a tough opponent and secured a second point for Falmouth with a 5 & 4 win.
Sarah Sandercock, Sue Willmott and Jax Buse all played well in the early stages of their games and built up healthy leads after the front nine holes. These experienced players were able to sustain the pressure on their opponents and close out their matches giving St Enodoc a 3-2 lead.
Meg Godfrey and Pauline Clifton were involved in a very close contest but it was Meg who maintained her composure on the eighteenth hole which enabled her to win her match ensuring victory for St Enodoc.
At this point, Trudie Tensjo was all square with Alison Samuel and with the outcome of the match already decided, the Falmouth player conceded the game.
St Enodoc will meet Perranporth in the next round on Sunday 6th July at Truro which will be a replay of last year’s final.
