On Sunday the 24th of October St Enodoc Golf Club played host to Budock Vean in the 1st round of the Frank Wills Salver, one of Cornwall Golf Union's, Men’s Winter Knockout competitions.
The Frank Wills is a Foursomes Competition and usually played at a neutral venue, this year however, due to Covid, the matches were drawn on a home or away basis.
The first match got underway at 9.40, in what only can be described as wet and tricky conditions.
As the last of the 5 matches passed through the halfway point at the 10th tee, the curse of the Home draw seemed real as only 1 of the St Enodoc pairings were up, 1 all square and 3 were down!
However, as the matches progressed, the weather improved and so did St Enodoc's Golf.
With the overall Score at 2 matches each, the 1st St Enodoc pairing of James Hutchings and Philip Hine found themselves the centre of attention, after finishing 18 holes all square they had to play to a finish .
The 19th hole saw both pairs, Budock Vean and St Enodoc over the back of the Green in 3 strokes. Budock Vean elected to putt from off the Green, the 40ft putt ran 8ft past the hole on slick Greens in windy conditions. James Hutchings then played a great chip shot to 6 ft from a very tricky lie, giving the home Club slight advantage. To much surprise of the onlookers, the visiting pair, again fooled by the conditions, proceeded to knock the 8ft putt another 5 ft back past the Hole.
Hine’s putt slipped past the hole and was conceded for a 6. Budock failed to hole their remaining putt and victory was St Enodoc's.
After the Match, Team Captains exchanged congratulations and commiserations, but most importantly thanked all players, caddies and supporters for the wonderful spirit in which the matches were played.
