A blustery but thankfully dry Autumn day greeted the players from St Enodoc and Porthpean to contest Round 1 of the 2016/17 Frank Wills Salver at Lanhydrock. The basic format is five Foursomes pairs played under handicap for those between of between 5 and 12 handicaps. This was one of those days when little went right for St Enodoc and all credit to Porthperan who won 4 – 1.
First out were Norman Evans & Rich Hawken who at one stage were 3 down to Paul Edmunds & Ian Harris; all credit to them as they ground their way back to All Square on the 16th tee. Sadly a 3 putt on 16 and a difficult second shot on the short 17th saw them go down 2&1. Debutants Mike Lovett & Martin Trees never got into gear and lost 6&4 to Jeremy Maude & Jim Oliver. The one highlight were the ever dependable Kevin Brenton & John Pease who beat Joe Miners & Tony Kellow 4&2; they have always been solid performers and can be relied upon to bring home their point and they did it yet again today.
Andy Bunt & Russell Combellack - despite carer and caddy son Joe on the bag had a round from hell which started badly and never looked up going down 6&5 to David Warburton & Steve Arthur. The final pair of Kenton Williams & Steve Smith had a steady start and a tight match being All Square at the turn. The loss of three holes on the trot took its toll on them and they fell away to a 5&4 defeat at the hands of Paul Jackson & Dave Tregidgo. Well done Porthpean and good luck in the next round.
How times have changed with our Frank Wills Salver team beaten in Round 1 for the second successive year yet in the three years prior to that we managed Win, Runner Up and Win. There is always next year......Anyway it was good to see a healthy turn out of St Enodoc supporters and it is now onto CTC next weekend.
