Played at quirky Trethorne GC on a cold and very windy day this was a much tougher match than the result implies.
Out first was the ever dependable Kevin Brenton with a new partner John Rowe, they were never in too much trouble and ran out winners 2&1. Next out Neil Bradley and John Pease after being behind for much of the match and pulling back level late on they sneaked it on the 18th, 1 up. They were followed by the young guns (If you can call them that in their thirties) Chris Jennings and James Hutchings, they struggled against a wily old pair who never gave our boys a chance, Chris and James lost 3&2. Out fourth pair was Rod Frost and new boy Paul Warren, again in the early stages our two were hanging in there for the front nine and gradually pulled away and finished the match on the 17th 3&1. Our final pair Stuart Fleet and Paul Clemens had a torrid time to start with going 3 down to a very handy pair who knocked in several birdies, by the time they came down 15 they had pulled back to all square, won the 16th to go one up and lost the 17th to go back to level, at this point Rod and Paul had just shaken hands on 17 to claim the overall victory 3.5-1.5. Leaving Stuart and Paul agreeing to take a half.
All in all a very satisfying dogged performance, which at one point was slipping away from us. The team much appreciated the support received from the St Enodoc Members present and particular thanks goes to the travelling reserve Richard Lawrence.
The next round will be the weekend of the 24th/25th November against Killiow GC who beat Whitsand Bay in their opening match. The venue will be announced in due course.
