St Enodoc's Ernie Goodman Trophy is Cornwall's premier Mens Open stroke play competition and is always played in the first weekend of September. This time last year competitors had to contend with strong winds and thick rough made lush by the summer rain. Today however by contrast the weather was balmy and the rough burnt back by the summer of sunshine we have enjoyed, there was scarcely a hint of breeze in the morning however later in the afternoon it picked up a little to 10 mph. These conditions were reflected in some good scoring.
Seventy-two players from thirty-four clubs made up this years field; some from considerable distances away. Amongst the competitors was the winner of last years Rachel Biddle Scratch Trophy Josh Greenaway and who is a player on form having won the St Enodoc Presidents Cup one week ago.
In this competition there are separate trophies for the best gross and best net scores with each winner receiving £300. After a period off golf with glandular fever St Enodoc's Joe Cruse has come back on good form and his two round total of 141 was enough to secure the Rachel Biddle Trophy. The golfer who probably travelled the furthest was Matt Gibson of Hillsborough GC and he won the handicap section and Goodman trophy.
