The Lady Vets and Senior Men held their annual Duck Dawdle on Friday, 20 November and it was unanimously agreed that everyone had a quacking good time. Although the wind strengthened steadily and the temperature dropped significantly, the promised rain failed to materialize. The format of four-ball teams with three Stableford scores to count resulted in some very impressive scores, with the winners returning a below par card, whilst second and third were only a whisker away.
Other notable performances were by two last minute replacements – elderly strangers from a foreign land, Mr Don Duck and Ms Daisy Duck, who despite their seniority, remain scratch players. Both returned 36 points, a score matched by very few others in the field, which made them very popular with their team. Unfortunately, they were absent from the dinner and prize-giving and it was discovered later that they had flown home (sans aeroplane) very rapidly as the head of their nursing home near Hollywood, a Mr Michael Mouse Jnr was beside himself with anxiety and had put out an ‘all cars’ alert that they were missing.
Prizes, which were all duck related (which may explain why the two feathery visitors departed so promptly) were presented by the Senior Captains and the unelected captain (or should that be spokesman !) of the winning team, Keith Hawke, was eloquent and generous on behalf of everyone present, in his thanks and praise to the catering staff, but especially to Seniors’ Secretary, Kevin Birkett for his flawless organization of the day.
The booby prize of four Euro Millions Lottery tickets went to a team who wish to remain anonymous. The jackpot was £130 million, so they hoped to remain thus, but had they won, it is unlikely that they would have been unable to retain the secrecy of winning the biggest golf prize in the history of the game ! In keeping with their day however – they lost again !
