As the mizzle cleared at Mullion, on Sunday April 26th, the St.Enodoc B team ventured forth in the county week preliminaries. Drawn against last year’s finalists West Cornwall, who were the second seeds, this was always going to be a tough match.
First out were Andy Bunt and Nigel Connolly (making his debut) against the Hutchins father and son combination who have a good record in county team events. Andy and Nigel played excellent golf, keeping the pressure on and when they had won 3&2 they were only two over gross.
Next came Paul Clemens and Dennis Brown. Though behind early on they battled back to be all square after seven holes. A mysterious lost ball at the eighth and solid play from their opponents, around the turn meant that the momentum was against the St.Enodoc pair and battle as they might they couldn’t turn it around. Their opponents one of whom was Rod Handyside, a wily veteran of such games, closed out the match out on the 14th.
Bringing up the rear were Ade Halling and Bob Cruse. This pair got off to a fast start against two five handicappers, Richard Bunch and Rod Jenkin. Ade and Bob played well, not letting their opponents reverse the tide and closed out the match 4&3.
Having won 2-1, the team now go forward to play against Tehidy Park in the quarter finals, during county week, on Friday 24th of May,
Well done to all involved.
