Cornwall Captain Andy Burt (left) receives the coveted Pasty Trophy from losing Captain Mark Jarvis.
Cornwall vs The Rest of the World is one of the events on the Mens golfing calendar at St Enodoc; eagerly anticipated, noisy and very competitive are perhaps the words which most readily come to mind.
Churchill once said that "Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm". Well that is normally the case for the RoW team as they rarely succeed in this match and no doubt Andy Burt the Cornwall Captain will have started the day (a good day for golf it must be said - dry and sunny) full of confidence. The scoring system agreed upon for this year was normal match play for the "Oggie", plus the team aggregate stableford scores to decide who paid for the wine. Thus a pair losing say 4&3 had the opportunity of recovering some pride and possibly some money by buliding a decent better ball stableford score.
The after match dinner was as noisy and good spirited as usual but nonetheless an upbeat and happy occasion all the same. Mark Jarvis was gallant in accepting defeat whilst Andy Burt was brief and not at all triumphant in accepting the Oggie trophy. Dave Oldham hoovered up the usual fines for crimes both real and imagined to the benefit of the Club Captain's charity.
