On a magical day for golf the men’s competition returned some fantastic scores. The sunshine brought 80 members out to compete in the first round of the Colonel’s and Metropole Cups. The wind came up through the afternoon but the dry and warm conditions made for enjoyable golf.
In the Colonel’s Cup division Mike Masters topped the board with 38 points, after his win on the Holywell in the Wednesday evening stableford he is still on form. Russell Combellack finished second with 37 points on countback from Steve Chapman in 3rd. Both Russel and Steve had handicap reductions, with Steve now playing off +1. Josh Greenaway was 4th with 36 points and Paul Warren finished 5th with 35 points.
The Metropole Cup division saw Paul Honey taking the lead with a brilliant 40 points. After a struggle with injury Paul is back in full swing with par after par and a birdie on the 4th. Paul is cut to 15. Paul Godfrey finished in 2nd place on countback with 39 points after birdies on the 11th and 14th. Paul is also cut, to 14. Richard Blake had to settle for 3rd after countback with 39 points finishing ahead of Richard Bentley, Malcolm Knight and David Barber who all had 35 points.
